Hey, it has been a minute since my last post, but I felt the urge to talk about the 'fakeness' of social media and share my thoughts on this topic :) As young adults growing up in this digital age, we've all experienced the highs and lows of social media. Whether we're scrolling through Instagram seeing others have fun or posting with our friends, it is easy to get caught up in the illusion of perfection that social media presents.
It's no secret that the majority of people only post the highlights of their lives. I'll be the first to admit that I am guilty of this too! When was the last time you saw someone on social media being honest about how they're truly feeling? It is not a common occurrence. Instead, you are much more likely to be bombarded with posts of uni/ college kids out partying, living their 'best lives'.
When we only get a small glimpse of a person's life through social media, it is easy to compare ourselves to them. I remember feeling this way when I first started university. I wondered why I wasn't having as much fun as others were, why was I not partying, drinking, and so on.
Of course, I am not suggesting that we should all quit social media or start posting every low moment on our Instagrams. There are definitely benefits to social media, such as staying connected with friends and family. However, as young people, I think we need to remind ourselves that social media is not real life. We should become more honest about our own lives, and imagine how beneficial this could be to someone else who might be struggling. By opening up about our vulnerabilities, we can foster a more authentic online community.
Thank you for reading my inner thoughts on the 'fakeness' of social media. Hopefully, we can keep the convo going!
